FATHER AND SON EVENING

Y.M.C.A. Gathering In Barracks

“In the rush and bustle of life today we have lost the art of getting together as a family, and doing things such as family gatherings and picnics.” said the president of the Christchurch Y.M.C.A. (Mr A. E. Collins) in his welcome to more than 600 fathers and sons to the association’s ‘Father and Son Evening” held in the King Edward Earracks. Mr Collins said he hoped that fathers would take time off from doing the garden and go down to Lyttelton and drop a fishing line off the end of a wharf with their boys. Even if they did not catch anything it was a good opportunity for fellowship together. The Y’s Men’s Club stood for fun. fellowship and service, said its president (Mr M. McClurg). Members helped the Y.M.C.A. in service and had fun and fellowship doing so. Y.M.C.A. facilities, such as club work and camping, cost money and as the Y.M.C.A.’s funds relied mainly on contributions, it did not permit the use of a large staff. One of the many openings provided for Y’s Men was in augmenting staff, said Mr McClurg. The Y.M.C.A. was not just for young men but for families. Two Y.M.C.A. indoor basketball teams. B.G.H. and Y Boys played] a demonstration game to a 24-all draw. ‘’Unusual Basketball” was provided by members of the I Y.M.C.A. Young Adult Club. i There were relays with fathers matched against sons. musical; items bv the Fergusson sisters and| an evangelical address by Mr ]John Shoesmith.
