KAIAPOI CLUB JUBILEE

Early Members Recalled

A deed drawn up giving J. G. (Jock) Yellowlees the lease of an area of land in Kaiapoi for the purpose of playing golf, was the beginning of the Kaiapoi Golf Club, said Mr E. J. Corcoran, at the club’s golden jubilee dinner, held at Kaiapoi on Saturday evening. “Pre-eminence must be given to •Jock, the Scot.’ The first year he Was the club champion, the second year he was club champion, and 25 years later he was again club champion.”

The club became an incorporated body about 1921-22, as the land for the links was purchased after the lease expired. The club then had a very desirable course of seven holes, with two across the road, and these were known as “the cowpatch,” said Mr Corcoran. A further piece of land was bought and converted from an area of broom and sand into another section of the course.

“I would like to pay a tribute to the men who helped the club in the depression years. Twenty men worked on the links then and we owe them a debt.”

The club had 280 members—l3o men and 150 women, said the club president (Mr R. C. Stewart). “The club fellowship is splendid. The senior-junior partnership is good for the fellowship,” said Mr Stewart. •‘lf we remain as cheerful in defeat as in victory, the club will go from strength to strength.” Mr J. H. Blackwell spoke of early members of the club, among whom were Dr. Davies, Messrs F. L. Parnham, J. G. Yellowlees, and G. Miller. ’ Among the early members. Messrs Yellowlees and Miller had the advantage of knowing something about golf, and they very capably instructed other less knowledgeable members. There were 21 foundation members.
