LIFE SAVING

South Brighton Club

“With the popularity of the beach from South Brighton to Southshore increasing rapidly, the problem of bathers in the unpatrolled section of the beach remains a major one,” says the annual report of the South Brighton Surf Life Saving Club to be presented by the president (Mr N. F. Robertson) at the club’s annual meeting on Wednesday.

“An innovation last season was the construction of a portable tower, and this has considerably widened the scope of the patrol by allowing a greater surveillance of the area at a point closer to the bathers. A further service to the public in the form of a portable siren to be attached to the tower for summoning members in cases of emergency is under consideration,” says Mr Robertson. In the coming season an annual trophy competition between South Brighton and the Waimairi club would probably be started, says Mr Robertson. A trophy has already been given, and it remains only to decide what form the competition will take.

“Five rescues were made last season all being made without the use of line and reel. Three of them were carried out by the reserve patrol team which was on duty while members were participating in local competitions at other beaches. This emphasises that patrols must be maintained at all scheduled times, even if the club’s representation at carnivals is weakened,” says Mr Robertson. “Potholes continue to be a hazard and in conjunction with the prevailing drift are liable to change in location daily.
