Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON. October 19.

A pair of broken shoulder straps last night cut short the programme of entertainment for Queen Elizabeth at the State dinner given in her honour by the Secretary of State. Mr Dulles. The embarrassed woman was Marge Champion, of the dancing team,- “The Champions.” Marge and Gower Champion followed Jane Powell, .the actress and singer, on the afterdinner programme. Mrs Champion’s troubles began during their first number, a dance entitled “Country Fair.”

“Pop” went the red shoulder strap. The rhinestone strap quickly followed. Mrs Champion’s dress remained firmly in place, but she finished her dance with a half-curtsy to the Queen with both hands firmly clutching the top of her dress. Blushing, Gower Champion explained to the guests: “So happy were we to appear before this distinguished gathering, that, as you see. we rushe<’ out and bought Marge a new dress. “Unhappily, it has parted company. We had planned two more numbers. But instead, we, too, must regretfully part company. . Good night and thank you.” j The Queen led the applause. 1
