AIRMAN SAVED AFTER CRASH Solo Record Bid
(Rec. 10 p.m.) MADRID, Oct. 19 An American airman, William Wyatt, overdue on a solo record bid flight from Texas to Rome, was brought into Corunna port, north-west Spain, today after being rescued by a Spanish fishing vessel 25 miles from the port. His plane had ditched in the sea.
Wyatt said that he ran into storms, his wings iced, and he began to lose altitude.
He managed to keep flying for some hours and at about 37 miles from the coast had tried to make radio contact with Santiago de Composetla airfield. Soon afterwards, the plane went down into the sea. He broke the glass of the cockpit and crawled out on the wing. The fishing boat, Virgen del Burn Consejo. from Bermeo, soon rescued him and, towing the remains of his aircraft, brought him to Corunna.
Wyatt was attempting to fly the 5695 miles from Galveston, Texas, to Rome in a bid to beat the light plane record of 4973 miles. This was set up in 1940 by another American. William Odom, who flew non-stop from Honolulu to Teteboro, New Jersey.
