MURDER CHARGE IN BRITAIN
Accused Booed At Court Hearing
(N.2. Press Association —Convrighti LONDON, September 10.
People in the Court gallery shouted and booed today as Derrick Edwardson, a 31-year-old factory worker, was taken to the cells after police said he had admitted killing four-year-old Edwina Taylor. Edwardson, who gave himself up last night, was remanded in curtody for seven days on a charge of murdering Edwina on or about August 31. The girl’s body was found raped, strangled, and battered about the head last Thursday in a south-east London basement near her home. She had been missing for five days.
Detective-Superintendent Harold Marshall said in Court that when Edwardson was told Edwina’s body had been found in Si. Aubyns road, Upper Norwood, where he lives, he said: “That’s right I gave myself up. I killed her.” He was in Court four minutes. When the superintendent had ended his evidence, Edwardson was asked if he wanted to ask him any questions. He answered quietly: “No, sir.” He was granted free legal aid.
