Malaya Proclaims Its First Ruler

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec—lo p.m.) KUALA LUMPUR, September 2. Twenty-one guns boomed across the capital of newly-independent Malaya today proclaiming Tuanku Sir Abdul Rahman Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad installed as “King and Ruler of the Federation of Malaya with the title and style of His Majesty Yang Dipertuan Agong” (Paramount Ruler). Malaya, still rejoicing on its third day of independence, acclaimed its first King with shouts and cheering after a glittering ceremony at the palace.

A ritual going back to'the dawn of Malay history was enacted before fellow sovereigns, State guests from 30 countries, sarongclad courtiers and Cabinet members. As ancient music from flutes and drums was played in traditional off-key rhythm, the King kissed the blade of a gold-handled kris as a symbol of his loyalty to the nation.

Around the crowded throne room stood Malay guards dressed in regalia which has not changed from the 14th century and carrying six foot pikes and golden umbrellas while Moslem priests intoned prayers for the well-being of the country. Sitting to the right of the Royal dais was the Duke of Gloucester, who, on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, handed over sovereignty to Malaya two days ago.

The King, a short slight figure in flowing gold-threaded raiment stood on a seven-tiered dais under the golden canopy and swore: “We shall justly and faithfully perform our duties in the administration of the Federation of Malaya in accordance with its laws and Constitution which has been promulgated or which may be promulgated from time to time in the future. “Further, we do solemnly and truly declare that we shall at all times protect the Moslem religion and uphold the rules of law and order in the country.” Under the Constitution, the King will reign for five years when another monarch will be elected by nine rulers of the hereditary Malay States. Gift from Queen

A gift from Queen Elizabeth to the King, has been presented by the Duke of Gloucester. The gift, a silver-gilt cup and a pair of antique silver gilt candelabra, was presented after a Royal banquet last night. When handing over the presents the Duke said: “The Queen has asked me to deliver these presents with Her Majesty’s most sincere congratulations to you as the first holder of the high office which you have just assumed.

“The Queen is happy to know that Your Majesty, as paramount ruler of Malaya within her Commonwealth, together with their Highnesses, will continue that long and happy association with the British Crown which Her Majesty greatly treasures.”
