RANFURLY BEATS CORE, 2-1
Schoolgirls’ Tourney Final
For the second year in succession, Ranfurly District High School won the South Island secondary schoolgirls’ hockey tournament when it beat Gore High School 2-1 in the final yesterday. Five members of the winning team will be playing for Maniototo in the national tournament at Ashburton later this week. A feature of the game was the absence of offside play. The standard of play was agreed to be as high as in any of the previous years of the tournament. Scorers were Janice Turnbull for Gore, and Carol Evans (two goals) for Ranfurly. In the afternoon, a combined Christchurch secondary schoolgirls’ team was defeated 4-0 by a team representing the Rest of the South Island. The Christchurch team was: J Kelman (St Margarets): B. Dawson (St. Margarets), D. Cornish (West); D. Gainsford (Girls’ High School), S. Woods (Rangiruru), D. Lunn (Girls’ High School) captain; L. Cusdin (Girls’ High School), S. Wayman (West). H. Rich (St. Margarets), A. Comellach (St. MarSarets), N. Gordon (Girls’ High chool). . . , In the second match all the players were obviously tired, and unable to do themselves justice. It was obvious that the Southern schools play a harder type of hockey than do the Christchurch schools. The Christchurch half line was very good, and the best player on the field was L. Cullen (Gore High School), left back for The Rest. Both teams could have made more of their opportunities, although the bumpy ground did not' encourage good play.
