CLUB MATCHES
University Still Leads The leading team. University, had the bye when the Canterbury Women’s Hockey Association’s competitions were continued on Saturday. All the matches were very close, and several leading teams came close to being beaten. Results were:— Christchurch West 3, Rawhiti 1. Aranui 4, Teachers' College 3. Digby’s 4, Hornby 3. Carlton 5, Harewood 4. Points are:—University 12, Carlton 10 y 2 , Digby’s 10, Aranui 9, Christchurch West 7«/ a, Harewood 6, Hornby 5, Rawhiti 4>,L Teachers’ College Carlton v. Harewood The match between Carlton and Harewood was an even struggle, with the Harewood team playing well in the first half with good defence to hold Carlton to 2-all. From the bully after half-time Harewood scored two quick goals from snappy play. Carlton, with much better team work and good passing, backed by the concentrated support of the halves, went ahead from easy shots at goal. Both teams played soundly, but the positional play and cohesion of the Carlton players gave the team a win by 5 goals to 4.
Aranui v. Teachers* College Strong forward play by both sides, with good defence, were features of the game between Aranui and Teachers’ College. The forwards lost scoring chances by bunching. This was overcome later, and some good scoring by both teams was seen. Teachers’ College did not hit hard enough when clearing. This gave xhe Aranui half line every opportunity tp intercept quickly and send the forwards into attack. Selle Cane was again prominent in the forward line for Aranui and was always formidable when she was in the circle. The final score was: Aranui 4. Teachers’ College 3. Christchurch West v. Rawhiti In the Christchurch West-Rawhiti match there was scrappy play with little combination by either team. Strong defence by Rawhiti kept many Christchurch West raids from providing scores. Rawhiti did not look formidable on attack. Players did not mark correctly or keep positions. Christchurch West won after some good wing movements and crisp centres by 3 goals to 1.
Digby’s v. Hornby Digby’s and Hornby played a very open game, showing team cohesion and combination. The score fluctuated with the forwards pressing hard, but the defence held. Brilliant play was seen from the full-backs of both teams. A drawn game would have been a truer indication of the play. Both teams played constructive hockey. The final score was Digby’s 4, Hornby 3.
