WOMEN’S HOCKEY Canterbury Beats

Ashburton

Canterbury A beat Ashburton by j 8 goals to 4 in a representative women’s hockey match on Saturday.; Ashburton held Canterbury for quite a long time in the first half by anticipating the passes which were much too flat. The Ashburton players cleared well, showed speed with, attacking play and but for i strong defence by Canterbury would have scored.

Several times fly hitting by Canterbury let Ashburton through. The Canterbury players adapted themselves to their new positions after a while and then the combined play was noticeable. On the right it was most prominent where H. Turner and S. McCaw showed excellent team work. This combination put Canterbury in a winning position. C. Cole, left-winger, sent across some very good passes to the right which were accepted. The half-line was not as good as the Ashburton line but the backs and the goalkeeper were safe.. Ashburton rallied in the second half and scored a further three goals from excellent forward PW. especially by M. McKay. Canterbury regained ascendancy and won by the good margin of 8 goals to 4. B Team’s Match Canterbury won a B teams* match by 5 goals to 1. Canterbury had little team combination and repeatedly the forwards bunched when in a position to shoot. The Ashburton-right wing, B. Shaw, was the outstanding player on the field. Her frequent runs and ball control were exceptional but her good centre passes went astray for the want of a player to receive and shoot. Canterbury showed up with two fine right-wing attacks from which the winger trapped, shot and from the rebound fast following in by the centre gave Canterbury easy goals. Canterbury won by 5 goals to 1. Intermediate Match The Ashburton intermediate team showed better cohesion to beat Hornby by 3 goals to 1. Faster forward play and better control all round proved too much for Hornby which fought hard but could not match the concentrated forward attacks by Ashburton. Primary Schools* Match Canterbury drew with Ashburton, 2-all, in a very even primary schools’ match. Play was seldom past the 25-yard line of either side.
