DREDGE SALVAGE ATTEMPT

Successful Test Of Equipment (New . Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. August 2. An all-opt seven days a week effort is to be made to .Ivage the Auckland Harbour Board’s dredge, Hapai. A successful test of equipment was made yesterday afternoon. The dredge was holed by a hopper barge during a gale some weeks ago, and is lying on her side off Cheltenham Beach, in the Rangitoto Channel. An English salvage expert, Captain J N. Edwards, and senior board officers watched the test pull yesterday on the first set of piles and the first steel tower, mounted on the Hapai’s hull. Seven more towers and sets of piles will now be constructed to the same pattern. The job is likely to take several months, but no definite time limit has been set. Factors which could delay the work are bad weather, the tidal rip, which is very severe in the channel, and difficult conditions for pile driving.
