DISMISSALS SHELVED

Forest Service Workers

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 2 Dismissal notices handed to 50 New Zealand Forest Service workers had been withdrawn, the Minister of Forests (Mr G. W. Smith) said today. The men had been given notice from seven forest districts employing a total labour force of 140, the New Zealand Workers’ Union secretary (Mr H. J. Allen) said earlier this week.

Lack of finance had been given as the reason for the dismissals, he said. In each case, ample work was available—much of it urgent. Mr Allen said today that he had heard yesterday that the Minister had arranged for the suspension of the dismissals pending a personal investigation.
