PETER BAFFLES OUT OF CUP
Scratchings For Riccarton Peter Baffles was scratched yesterday for the Winter Cup, leaving 27 in the principal flat race at Riicarton today. Great Seal, which had drawn badly, and Humber Hawk were withdrawn from the Paparua Handicap, allowing Golden Warrior and Conker’s King to return to the field. Golden Warrior, a promising Tren-tham-trained galloper, will be ridden by G. W. Mein. Conker’s King will form a powerful bracket with the Riccartontrained Ditched now that;, he has reentered the field. The Blenheim-trained Saunter is still awaitinv re-entry. Haughty Step was scratched yes** terday for the Enfield Steeoles, and C. G. Low will have the mount on his stablemate. Miss Step. The Wirffcatui trainer. H. A. Anderton, said yesterday that Gabriel’s Gully was a doubtful starter, but that a decision would not be made until he consulted the owner, Mr J. S. Hamilton. Gabriel’s Gully outclassed the others in the Westenra Cup last Saturday. He carried off the Westenra Cup-Enfield Steeples double a year ago, and will be favourite if started today. • Lovely Morning dropped out of the Cashmere Plate yesterday. E. G. Low, who was to have ridden Archway, has been engaged for Harksheen since Archway’s withdrawal. Sun House has been scratched for the Trial Hurdles. The Woodville trainer, E. Ropiha, said yesterday that Gold Caste was not a certain starter in the Winter Cup. Gold Caste, a newcomer to Ropiha’s team, is badly drawn in the cup and would be racing short of his best distance.
