Swimming British Schoolboy Diving Champion

(N.Z Press A ssoctatton—Copy ria ht > LONDON, July 30. Brian Phelps, aged 13, and 4ft lOin, an East Ham schoolboy, who dives like an adult, has been selected to represent Britain against Italy at Dawdon, Durham. He is the youngest boy ever to represent Britain in a full international. He will be diving from a board nearly seven times his own height. Brian will have to do 10 different somersaulting and twisting dives, forward dives from backward takeoff, a one-and-a-half front somersault with one twist, and a somersault starting from >hand balance. He is one of Britain’s best prospects for the 1960 Olympic Games. He is junior under 16 champion of England. Diving from a high springboard is hard for a boy of his size. The force of the water bruises his head and arms.
