QUICK FROZEN VEGETABLES
Rapid Expansion Of Industry Continuing expansion of the vegetable processing Industry is indicated by the. increased acreages used for vegetables for processing and the new factories being built to handle them, says the annual report of the Department of Agriculture.' It is estimated that in 1956-57 11,500 acres were in vegetables for processing, the largest ar«as being at Hastings, Nelson, Gisborne, Christchurch, Pukekohe and Motueka. Nearly half of the vegetables are grown in Hawke's Bay. The greatest expansion has been in crops for quick freezing Three quick-freeze factories are being built at Hastings. More facilities are being provided for handling and. transporting quick- . frozen produce within the country, and overseas shipping companies are extending their deepfreeze carrying capacity. Peas and beans are the most important crops, but {frocessors are hoping that brussels sprouts, cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and broad beans will extend the processing season.
