SMUGGLING IN ITALY
Raids By Customs Agents
(Rec. 10 p.m.) ROME, July 30. A seven-months war on cigarette smuggling in Italy had uncovered _26 gangs and 242 smugglers had been charged, the Customs Police said last night. A special force of 500 Customs Police, split into 25 action groups, had ended the biggest antismuggling campaign in post-war years. Tobacco is a State monopoly in Italy. The Customs agents had traced 83.000 kilograms (81 tons) of contraband cigarettes, seized three fishing vessels, 10 tobacco loaded lorries, two motor-boats, and numerous cars. But in spite of the successes claimed, the “black market” cigarette-sellers were still touting their wares to tourists on Rome’s street corners last night. It seemed to be business as usual
