Couple’s Hurried Escape
A young married couple escaped in their night attire when the small wooden bungalow they were occupying at 511 Barbadoes street caught fire soon after 1 a.m. yesterdav. The young couple, Mr and Mrs J. Bysterveld. were asleep in a front room of the house when Mrs Bysterveld was awakened by a noise aiid found the backrooms of the house on fire. She and heg husband .could see that the fire had a strong hold, and they waited only long enough to throw clothes and bedding out a window before leaving the house. The rear of the'house was burning fiercely when engines from the Central and St. Albans stations arriVed, but the fire was quickly put out. The interior of the rear rooms and the hall was charred and furniture in them badly damaged. Sarking under the iron roof at the back of the house was alight snd sheets of corrugated iron had to be removed to make sure the fire was put out. The fire was noticed by a man. sitting in a parked car in Paclje street, a block to the west of Barbadoes street. He immediately gave the alarm from s' streetcorner box. Two young men passing the house ran into the back garden of the house, where they found a garden hose and played water on the rear of the house until the fire engines arrived. The cause of the fire is not known. More than 50.j)ersons, many in night attire or’ball dress, were attracted by the'fire. Mr and Mrs Bysterveld were to move out of the house today and had some of their possessions already packed in suitcases. These were stored in the front rooms of the house, and were not damaged
