WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Malvern Beats Canterbury
The team-work, positional play and fitness of Malvern proved too much for Canterbury, which was beaten by 3 goals to 1. The teams were:— Canterbury.—B. Makinson; G. Hall, J. Alston; S. McCaw, I. Cadigan (captain), S. Comer; M. Mann, C. Cole, H. Turner, G. Mayer, A. MacDonald. Malvern.— C. McNaughton; M. Begg, M. Colee; F. Musson, B. Jenkins (captain), M. Irvine; H. Westsi way, N. Gilmour, P. Saunders, M. Redman, H. Henderson. Fast forwards and quick interceptions by the halves, took Malvern deep into the Canterbury half. The hard crisp passing gave Malvern the sdyantage, and N. Gilmour netted. The Canterbury players were often out of position, and at times seemed to be lost in their respective places. The outstanding player of the match was B. Makinson, who saved for Canterbury repeatedly against strong Malvern raids. The score at half-time was: Malvern 2, Canterbury 0. Malvern had the better of play in the second half, with Canterbury scoring after a neat pass by C. Cole to H. Turner. Several times, Canterbury might have scored, but the shots went. wide. The Malvern backs were most impressive and hit hard when clearing Canterbury lacked cohesion and teamwork. Not at any stage did it appear to play as a team. Malvern, on the other hand, had the team-work and played constructive hockey to win 3-1. Umpires: Mrs E. Miles and Mr L. Hawke.
