Top Scientists To Confer
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) PUGWASH (Nova Scotia), July 7. Scientists from 14 nations will meet in this quiet Nova Scotia village on Monday to discuss the damages of atomic radiation. They are coming to the home of Mr Cyrus Eaton, a 73-year-old Cleveland, Ohio, industrialist, for three days of thought and informal discussion behind closed doors. Thirty-eight men have been invited and close to 30 are expected. Lord Bertrand Russell, the British philosopher and mathematician, will head the group.
Four Soviet scientists arrived last night. Twelve United States scientists and scholars have been asked and five from Britain, three from Germany and two each from Canada, India and Japan. Others are expected from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Communist China, Denmark, France and Poland. The list includes four Nobel prize-winners.
The Americans invited include Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, who bad much to do with the first atomic bomb.
Mr Eaton said he aimed to give thinking men an opportupity to relax together, exchange views, sharpen their own thinking and
“design formulas for us to live in this brand new world.”
The Australia representative is Professor Marcus Oliphant.
