PAPARUA COUNTY INSPECTION
Councillors Travel For Seven Hours
Paparua County Councillors travelled more than 140 miles by bus on Saturday on a seven-hours’ inspection of proposed works schemes and schemes which have recently been completed by the county.
Planned to give councillors a first-hand knowledge of the issues they are faced with, the inspection is carried out annually. The inspection tour took the councillors through Riccarton. Harewood, Hornby, Templeton. West Melton, Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, and part of Tai Tapu and Ladbrooks.
Most time was spent by the councillors inspecting the intake of the Halkett water race, which supplies water for stock in the Paparua county, part of Springs county, and Waimairi county. The intake, erected in 1940, is the lead-off for more than 25m--30m gallons of water a day. The party stopped on its way to the race to inspect an intake pipe at West Melton, which is responsible for the running off of 1.5 m gallons of water daily for use at a Sockburn freezing works. Problems associated with water race work took much of the councillors’ time and many features which had been discussed at council meetings, over maps, were “ironed out’-’ on the spot.
