Mr Mallaby’s Address,
Sir,—As a worker who is intensely interested in world affairs, I was unimpressed by Mr Mallaby’s address. The question is: “Is the Middle East to become a Russian sphere of influence?” It is fatuous to even suggest keeping Russia out. For one thing, she is the only Great Power whose frontiers actually touch the Middle East area. She must come in, diplomatically and economically, but, of course, not as a dominant power. In terms of Great Power rivalry the Middle East must remain an open area, and not became one power’s back-yard. Britain must abandon the idea of dominating this area, or 'having clients or subordinates there. To keep the peace, the major powers must guarantee the Arab-Israeli frontiers and support an international air force stationed at Cyprus. Negative references to Communism are nonsense. Let us discuss the facts. —Yours, etc.,
RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, July 3, 1957.
