CRITIC OF WOOLLEN MILLS’ EFFICIENCY
“No Reply To Letter To Association” (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 26.
Mr A.- C. Begg, senior vicechairman of the Meat and Wool Section of Fededated Farmers, today issued a statement on an invitation he received from the Woollen Mill Owners’ Association after his criticism of the mills last month.
Mr Begg said: “The Woollen Mill Owners’ Association apparently feels that its invitation should be acepted without regard to prior and more important engagements. As I wrote to the association on May 13, agreeing to meet members on a date after June 19, and have received no reply after a lapse of more than six weeks, the claim of the association’s spokesmen that they “still hope to pin me down to a definite date.” appears an attempt to trifle with the facts. “In the circumstances, I have decided that I am under no further obligation to the association, and I intend to publicise my views as and when opportunity and information coincide.”
Historic Totara Tree A 100-year-old totara standing 125 feet, high beside Geraldine's main street is marked by a plaque telling of its links with the town's past. On this spot about 1854 Samuel Hewlings, the Government surveyor who surveyed this “Talbot Forest’’ area, built the first house ,in Geraldine, the Bark Hut. It was also the site of the first school later of the first Geraldine Road Board office. The totara was planted by Hewlings to commemorate the birth of the ifirst child of European descent in the district.
