BEAUTIFYING RICCARTON
Scheme Directed By Expert
"The days of television may not be far and the backgrounds of our courses may have an important effect if television does come to racing.” said Mr W. R. Lascelles at the annual general meeting of members of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday.
Mr Lascelles was commenting on the beautification scheme being followed at Riccarton—a scheme initiated with the advice and assistance of Mr M. J. Barnett, formerly direc.tor of the reserves department ot the Christchurch City . Council.
Mr Lascelles said Riccarton provided some of thq best racing and training facilities in Australia and New Zealand, and he had been glad to learn that Mr Barnett’s knowledge was being utilised in preserving and improving the beauty of the surroundings.
The chairman (Mr G. H Grigg) said in his report that the old trees along the Carmen road boundary were being removed, and the area would be replanted. Two other areas had been cleared for the planting of suitable trees in copses, and more work of that nature was to be done from time to time.
A sum of money bequeathed to the racecourse trustees by the late Mr W. G. Strange, a member of the club for many years, is to be applied toward! the cost of the beautification scheme.
