Harriers TEAM FOR N.Z. TITLES
Selection Trial Arranged
A final trial for the selection of the Canterbury cross- ountry team to compete at the New Zealand chain; ionships on August 3 will be held on June 20, almost a month after the Canterbury championships. This was ap- roved by the Canterbury Cross-Country Running Management Committee last evening.
The decision was m de after consideration of a letter from the Olympic Club, which believed it was proposed to hold a four-mile trial on that date. The club did not consider the suggestion wise, as the national title was still run over six and a quarter miles, and it failed to see why a snorter distance was chosen.
Complaints had been made in the past that the . championship course at Motukarara was just another track race, said Mr J. Da]y, commenting on proposals that the section through the pine trees should be taken- on to the road. Everything had been done to toughen it by including rougher going had been opposed, however, and even when laying the trail last week he had been asked not to go into the rough. A proposal for running the course in the reverse direction to avoid congestion on the hill was defeated. He had heard unofficially that the Halloway Memorial race was to be reduced from 12 miles to just more than eight miles, said Mr Daly. If that was the case it merely became another Halswell. As a 12-mile crosscountry race it was something different. No specific conditions were laid down by the committee when approving the race, saii Mr W. A. Kennedy. Unless the Rover Scouts’ Club’s action contravened the rules it was purely a club affair. It had been decided to reduce the distance this year. A recommendation that the club be asked to reconsider its decision was lost. Women’s Grades Because of a discrepancy in the age grou i gs of entries submitted by women’s clubs for the Canterbury championships, it was decided the age for juniors wou'd be 12 and under 16, and for seniors over 16. Both races will be run over the colts’ course of about two miles. When Mr A. Memory said that some girls had asked for tie senior race to be run over t’-.e junior men’s course of three miles and one-eighth, Mr M. R. Craighead said that the committee should p’av safe in the first year of championships for women. For those who had done adequate training the t ree miles and one-eighth was all. right, but many running in the Kennett Cup of one mile and a half were in poor condition at the finish.
Mr Memory was appointed race manager for Ihe championships. Mr J. E. Millar referee, and Mr G E Vol'er starter.
The jury of appeal is Messrs B. G. Dingwall. E. B E. Taylor, and J. I. Young. The Greymouth Club was given permission to hold its two-man relay on October 6 instead of September 21.
