Goldwyn Wins Main Race At Blenheim
(From Our Own Reporter)
_ _ BLENHEIM, May 5. Goldwyn, a recent addition to C. C. McCarthy’s Riccarton team, gained, an overdue win for Mr and Mrs A. M. Cameron when he wore down the favourite. Scuppered, in the last few strides of the President’s Handicap, the first leg of the double on the second day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s annual meeting yesterday. It was only the vigorous riding of the Awapuni horseman, B. P. Wood which swung the issue in Goldwyn s favour. Appreciate again outclassed the open sprinters in the second leg of the double, the E. J. Harvey Handicap, to give the Orari trainer, L. H. Pratt, who had also been successful earlier in the day with Come On Boy, his third training success of the meeting. The racing opened in heavy rain, which had been practically continuous from an early hour yesterday morning, but the weather improved after the second race and remained fine but overcast until after the last race. The track was heavy, and the attendance was surprisingly good. Second Win Cristatus completed a double for the meeting when he outstayed the Mayfield Hack Hurdles field to win by a length from .Brown Baron, which finished better than Private Angelo to take second place by three-quarters of a length. Avalanche was two lengths back fourth a length and a half clear of Jolly Miller. x Brown Baron set the pace to the mile. Approaching the straight, Private Angelo took over from Cristatus, which was improving on the outside of Brown Baron and Jolly Miller. Cristatus drew out for a comfortable win. Come On Boy began smartly in the Maiden Stakes, and after being near the lead until the straight, disposed of his co-pacemaker. Winnings. quickly, but had to work hard to beat the win-favourite, Brian s Boy, by a nose. Brian’s Boy, which raced in about fifth position to the straight, was five lengths clear of Robes, which was in a photo-finish for third with Marveen. Bad Beginning Golden Warrier drifted to the rear at the start of the Marlborough Stakes, but improved his position as the field approached the half-mile, where Greenwood was leading lone and Zareska, with intervals to Olympic Torch and Gay Tommy. Golden Warrior quickly mastered Greenwood after straightening up, where Gay Tommy challenged on the outside of lone. At the furlong, Golden Warrior and Gay Tommy had drawn out, and the former heat his Riccarton rival by half a head. Greenwood held third place by two lengths from Royal Inca three and a half lengths back. The First Leg King’s Crest began best from an even start to the President’s Handicap and led at the end of half a furlong from Fulgent, Beau Ray, and Relinquish, which were racing in close order ahead of Benefactor, Scuppered, and Goldwyn. There was no change into the back, but at the half-mile R. A. Burt took Scuppered into a narrow lead on the outside of King’s Crest. Goldwyn moved up to challenge Scuppered at the furlong, where Beau Ray was looking for racing room on the inside of Goldwyn, behind Scuppered. Under a hard ride. Goldwyn wore down Scuppered, which was a length in front of Beau Ray. Shoal finished boldly from the rear half a length back, clear of the weakening King s Crest, which was followed by Fulgent, Kiaree Beau, and Relinquish.
Narrow Win Meteorologist appeared to be racing comfortably when he moved through to take the lead from the pacemaker, Night Patrol, before the straight in the Apprentices’ Hack Handicap, and was still a length clear at the furlong when Saorita put in a challenge which carried her past the Riccarton galloper to win by a head. Slip o Heather, which had been near the rear to the half-mile, was running on in third place a length back, ahead of the weakening Night Patrol. Tire Riccarton trainer, G. R. Pelling, was compensated for Meteorologist's narrow defeat when Nehru outclassed the middle distance hacks in the Pelorus Handicap. Nehru had only Transgressor behind him at the end of a furlong, but by the halfmile he had Improved to be sharing the trail on the outside of Olympic Torch and Ultimax. Nehru ran past Instanter at the furlong, and was not extended to win by two and a half 'lengths. Instanter was second by three lengths from Olympic Torch, which was followed home at intervals by Ultimax, Passchenedaele, and Ngahuia.
Appreciate’* Win Appreciate ran on too strongly for Vita Glow In the second leg of the double, and beat the Masterton mare comfortably by a length. Assembly, which made a short-lived challenge outside the furlong, was a weakening . third, three lengths back, six lengths clear of Kiatoa .which narrowly beat Greenwood for fourth. Appreciate was slowest away, and Saunter was chopped back at the start. Vita Glow began brilliantly and at the end of a furlong had opened up , a lead of six lengths on Kiatoa and' Greenwood, which were racing together a length ahead of Appreciate, which had moved up quickly to share fourth place with Assembly. Approaching the straight, Appreciate and Assembly had reduced the leader's margin to less than two lengths. Soon after straightening up, Appreciate ranged alongside Vita Glow, which was under pressure, and Assembly made a short-lived challenge on the inner. Appreciate then drew out for a comfortable win.
Scottish King joined the pacemaker, Clansman, with about half a mile to run, in the Havelock Hack Handicap, and drew out for an easy four and a half length win. Clansman, which broke away from his rider while walking around at the start and galloped almost a mile, tired badly from the furlong, but was an easy second. The totalisator on-course handled £21,704, including £2295 on the double, compared with £28,873 last vear. The double, Goldwyn-Appre-ciate, {laid £6l Ils 6d for £l. Results:—
