BROOM WANTED BY CLUB
Catchment Board
Reserve Some members of the North Canterbury Catchment Board are against the Canterbury Jockey Club’s being allowed to use an area of atiput 20 acres of the board’s reserves for growing broom. Four members—Messrs E. J. Stalker, H. H. Petrie, F. L. Wright and C. M. Williams—yesterday voted against a proposal that the board’s soil conservation officer (Mr R. D. Dick) and the engineering staff should have discussions with the secretary of the jockey club. It was approved only on the casting vote of the chairman, Mr R. M. D. Johnson. The club asked for an area from which it could obtain broom for its steeplechase course at Riccarton. Last year, the board took out of leasehold an area of about 800 acres for river protection purposes, Mr Johnson said. “I am concerned that the board has got to the stage of leasing land for the growing of noxious weeds,” said Mr Stalker. “There must be plenty of land available for this purpose without the board providing a reserve, when there is a great demand from farmers to lease reserves.”
The chairman said that the board would merely be authorising discussions which would be reported back to the board.
