UNION LEADER IS INDICTED

Dave Beck Charged With Tax Evasion

(Rec. 8 p.m.) TACOMA (Washington), May 2. A Federal grand jury today indicted the Teamsters’ Union president, Dave Beck, on charges of income-tax evasion.

Beck, head of the biggest union in the United States, was accused ©f wilful attempted evasion of 56,419 dollars in his 1950 income taxes.

The jury acted as Beck was preparing to face further questioning next week from two other groups looking into his financial affairs. On Monday, he is scheduled to answer charges before the American Federation of Labour—Council of Industrial Organisations (A.F.L.-C.1.0.) that his union is dominated by corrupt influences.

[The A.FX.-C.LO. is industrial labour’s governing body in the United States, having a position similar to the Federation* of Labour in New' Zealand.] On Wednesday, the Senate “Rackets” Committee will resume its investigation on charges that Beck used 320,000 dollars in union funds for his own benefit. Beck had cited his income-tax troubles in refusing to answer questions before the committee last month. His lawyer said at the time that an indictment was expected soon.
