DEFENCE OF FRANCE

“British Line To Be Followed” (Rec. 10.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 3. France was planning a new defensive system on the British lines and hoped to have the present Army set-up completely modified the next two years, the “News Chronicle” said today. Under the plan the Army would be divided into two distinct bodies:— (1) An ultra-rapid intervention force of regular troops and specialists always ready to be rushed to a danger point. (2) A conscript force in charge of the country’s territorial defences. Emphasis would naturally be put on guided weapons and antiatomic armaments, the “News Chronicle” said. But France’s dilemma was how to cut the Army’s strength while the situation remained unstable in Algeria.

There were still 65,000 troops in Morocco and 45,000 in Tunisia. Until peace was restored in Algeria the French High Command opposed any reduction in the number of forces stationed in both neighbouring countries, the “News Chronicle” said.
