CURRENT NOTES

A snow maiden, seated in a sleigh drawn by a reindeer, was one of the scenes in a musical play, “Life in Norway,” which was written dnd produced by Mrs L. Scrimshaw, leader of the Canterbury Women’s Club music circle, and presented to members in the club rooms last evening. The play comprised sketches and acts relating to Norwegian composers and painters. Those taking part wore bright coloured ski-ing jerseys and caps, with scarves and skirts and white aprons heavily trimmed with crocheted and knitted lace. Mrs W. D. Bunt presided. Those taking part in the play gave choruses, duets and trios. Vocal solos were sung by the following: Mesdames P. Carr, P. Z. Harris, N. Sherris. W. Owen, D. Stewart, C. Shaw, and C. Wilson. A pianoforte solo was played by Mrs H. Wilson, and Mrs L. Bielby gave an elocutionary item. The accompanist was Mrs S. Fogg. Miss Nancy Wise, a Christchurch actress, who recently returned from overseas, gave a talk to the Canterbury Travel Club yesterday. Mrs A. M. Vile thanked the speaker. Items were given by Mrs Linda Haase and the accompanist was Mrs W. E. Olds. Mrs J. W. Graham extended a welcome to the following visitors: Miss Francis Cannon (Scotland), Mrs A. C. Rowe and Miss Eaddy (Auckland), Miss Ann Atmore and Mrs A. Mountier (Wellington), and Mrs B. Behrnes (Christchurch).

The Wairarapa Garden Club met at the home of Mrs H. S. Lawrence. Mrs B. Wood presided and Mrs R. A. Young spoke on dried flowers and winter decorations. Results of competitions were: trough of chrysanthemums, class A, Mrs J. Russell 1, Mrs H. T. Jennings 2; class B, Mrs H. Hiatt 1, Mrs Quarrell 2, Mrs Fraser 3; large bloom, class A. Mrs H. Wanklyn 1, Mrs Quarrell 2. Miss M. Porritt 3; class B, Mrs Thomas 1, Mrs R. A. Harman 2; small bloom, class A, Mrs H. Wanklyn 1, Mrs Nicholls 2, Mrs J. Russell 3; class B, Mrs O. A. Y. Johnson 1, Mrs T. Gibson 2, Mrs L. Wills 3; four apples, class A, Mrs H. Roberton 1, Mrs Cordner 2, Mrs H. T. Jennings 3: class B, Mrs Fraser 1, Mrs Gibson 2.

Brent 2, Mrs M. Woodhouse 3. The Christchurch Orpheus Choir celebrated its twenty-first birthday with a supper party at Elizabeth House. Mr Robert Allison welcomed the guests, and items were given by Marjorie Nelson and J. H. Cocks, vocal duets; Mrs Nar Voller and Robert Allison, vocal solos. Pianoforte solos were played by Mrs Mabel Mason who has been the choir’s accompanist for a number of years. The birthday * cake was made by Mrs L. B. Salkeld and cut by Mrs S. C. Andrews, both original members of the choir.

Mrs Amy Pike and Miss Catherine Paton, twin sisters, of Bealeay avenue, celebrated their seventieth birthday this week when they were entertaned at a buffet tea followed by a picture party.
