LOYALTY TO HUSSEIN

“Older Mayors And Sheiks”

(Rec. 9 pm.) NEW YORK, April 27. King Hussein’s hand was strengthened today by pledges of loyalty to him and his new government from sheiks and mayors in the older part of Jordan, the American Associated Press reported from Amman. The 21-year-old King also received some public expressions of support from the small but crowded Palestinian part of Jordan which was acquired during the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli war. It was among the Palestinians that the Communists, infiltrating the ranks of Arab nationalist movements, exerted most of their influence. Critical Broadcasts The United Press reported from Amman that Moscow and Cairo radios broke out with a rash of propaganda attacks against King Hussein today. Moscow Radio’s Arab-language broadcasts heard in Amman directly attacked King Hussein and accused him of collaborating with American imperialism against the will of the people. Cairo’s “Voice of the Arabs” station, the most powerful transmitter in the Middle East, was also severely critical. Shortly afterward Jordan’s Prime Minister, Mr Ibrahim Hashem, called a Cabinet meeting to discuss the internal situation and Arab world politics. TV RESEARCH BY U.S. NAVY WASHINGTON, April 28. The United States Navy today announced development of a revolutionary new television screen winch, it said, permitted sharper contrasts in black and white receivers during the daytime. The Navy said that the new screen, which used a film of phosphor on the face of the tube, instead of the usual white powdered facing, also provided ■ new and simplified approach” to colour television. It was expected to lead to a development of three-dimensional viewing.

They would have jurisdiction over any people who “endanger the safety of the country, attack a government official, or are affiliated with a political party.’* News of the decree followed the lifting of the Amman curfew for four hours today—the longest period since the curfew was imposed under martial law three days ago. Bagdad Radio announced tonight that hundreds of Syrian troops, moving northwards by lorry, were withdrawing from Jordan, under cover of aircraft. Earlier, today the Associated Press reported from Damascus an official Syrian denial that Jordan had asked the Syrians to withdraw troops, although the Damascus report did not say whether Syrian troops were in fact leaving Jordan. Meanwhile the Associated Press reported from Cairo that the Egyptian President, Colonel Nasser, tonight called his Cabinet together, presumably to tell the Ministers of the outcome of talks between the Syrian President, Mr Kuwatly, with King Saud of Saudi Arabia, at which Colonel Nasser’s chief political adviser, Wing Commander Aly Sabry, also was present. Mr Kuwatly and Wing Commander Sabry returned to Cairo from the Mecca talks today, and were met at the airport by Colonel Nasser, who drove off with Mr Kuwatly for an immediate supper conference before the Egyptian Cabinet was called to meet. The Associated Press said that some Cairo diplomatic sources saw Jordan’s King coming out on top in his anti-Communist struggle. If this happened, they said, Syria would be left isolated in a pro-Western ring of Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon —as well as Israel. Eden To Visit Ottawa BOSTON, April 26. Sir Anthony Eden will be discharged from hospital on Monday, a medical bulletin said today. Dr. Richard Catell, the surgeon, said in today’s report that Sir Anthony Eden would spend a week near Boston before flying to Ottawa on May 6. During the visit to Ottawa, Sir Anthony Eden and Lady Eden would be the guests of the Gov-ernor-General of Canada (Mr Vincent Massey), said the bulletin.
