BUTTER PRICES IN BRITAIN
Slight Increase Reported
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 28. In the fortnight to April 15. ex store prices of New Zealand and Australian butter rose from 250 s and 248 s a cwt respectively to 258 s and 256 s under pressure of heavy buying by the trade, says the latest issue of the “Dairy Marketing Bulletin.”
Some of the buying was designed to cover the trade’s requirements over the Easter holidays. A Trade during March in New Zealand and Australian butter was slow and ex store prices fell from a nominal 268 s a cwt for New Zealand and 266 s a cwt for Australian to 250 s and 248 s respectively. The demand for Danish butter was also slack in March. The Danes were sending 1200 to 1500 tons a week to the United Kingdom and could not always clear their stocks because the retail margins between New Zealand and Australian, arid Danish butter, were too great. In the eight days to March 26, the Danes reduced their C.I.F. price by 32s a cwt, making the landed price about 286 s a cwt.
During the first week of April, ex store prices of New Zealand and Australian butter rose by 2s under pressure of the heavy buying.
