Saturday’s Play Cancelled

The first day’s play in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's annual Easter tournament was cancelled at Wilding on Saturday because of the rain and the wet courts. The tournament is now scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. today.

Wilding Park’s hard courts which are used for this fixture were covered in water, and even if the rain had ceased it would have been some time before they would have been fit for play. Matches were set down to begin at 9.30 a.m., and the tournament manager (Mr W. A. Clothier) waited until 11.30 a.m. before he made his postponement decision.

The tournaments usually is played on the Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, but this year it have to be completed next Saturday.

Rain Stops Play At Dunedin

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 21. Rain caused the play in the Otago lawn tennis .championships to be abandoned yesterday. The young Otago player. D. V. Shaw, who was in good form, entered the semi-finals of the men s singles with a win over D. G. Green, the New Zealand squash champion, although he had to produce his best form before he could take the first set. Miss J. Davidson, the Canterbury representative, entered the semi-finals of the women’s singles when she beat Mrs E. Mitchell, of Dunedin, in straight seis. Results:— Men’s Singles Quarter-finals R. Bennet beat E. Kirkland. 6-4. 4-6, 6-3; D. V. Shaw beat D. G. Green, 9-7, 6-2; B. Crofts beat T. Harneiss, 6-1, 6-3. Women’s Singles Quarte -finals Miss M. Oliver beat Miss D Vesty. 6-2. 6-4; Mrs M. Rennis beat Miss S. Field, 6-3. 6-1; Miss J Davidson beat Mrs E. Mitchell, 6-2, 6-0.

Praise For Miss R. Morrison

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, April 19. Tennis writers are predicting that Ruia Morrison, the Maori holder of the New Zealand women’s title, will go far in her first tournament season in Britain. The “Daily Telegraph” writer particularly praises her 6-4, 6-2 win. over Mrs J. L. Deloford (Warwickshire) in the second round at the Cumberland Club, Hampstead. Mrs Deloford. he says, is not far short of the top 10 British women players, and to beat her renresents a solid achievement The “Daily Mail” calls Miss Morrison “small, neat, and a beautiful mover.” The “Manchester Guardian” say’s she is a neat player with a calm match brain, who moves quickly and daintily on the court, takes an early ball and admirably controls her cut and backhand strokes.

Hoad Denies Offer By Kramer

The Australian Davis Cup pla.\er, Lewis Hoad, today denied reports that he had received a 125,000-dollar professional offer from the promoter. Jack Kramer. He acknowledged that talk of an open tournament might speed his departure from amateur ranks. •All this talk about an open tournament disturbs me,” Hoad said during a brief stop in New York on his way to Europe. “I flguie if open tournaments come the pro tours will be out “So I’m going all out for a good year, so I can get a tour in beiore it closes. Anybody would be foolish not to be interested in money like that.” A report from Los Angeles today said Kramer and Hoad had met in Los Angeles to work out details for. a 125,000-dollar guarantee for Hoad if he won Wimbledon, and 90,000 dollars if he had just an ordinary year.

SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) (Rec. 10' p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, April 20. The top seeded player, Eric Strugess, today won the South African men’s singles lawn tennis championship for the eleventh time. He beat the unseeded 21-year-old player. Gaeton Koenig, 9-7, 6-3. 6-1, in the final. The women’s doubles final was won by the South Africans. Mrs Beryl Bartleet and Miss G wendy Love, who beat the Australians. Daphne Seeney (now married to the South African international player, Trevor Fancutt), and Mrs Theo Hale, 6-2, 6-4. The remaining finals will be played on Monday.

MONTE CARLO TOURNEY

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) MONTE CARLO, April 19. Miss Margaret Hellyer (Australia) was beaten 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, by Italy’s second-ranked Mrs Anelise Bellani, in the women’s singles semi-finals of tne Monte Carlo international lawn tennis tournament today. Miss Yola Ramirez (Mexico) beat Miss Ann Shilcock (Britain) 6-2-,' 6-4, to win the other semifinal.
