Fencing Auckland Beats Australians

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 21. Containing a high proportion of former and current national champions, the Auckland side gave the visiting Australian Universities’ fencing team a thorough testing at the Y.W.C.A. gymnasium yesterday. Despite a marked improvement on their Thursday’s display, the Australians were beaten in all four sections and very heavily so in the sabre. The scores to Auckland were 12-1 in the foil, 10-8 in the epee, 14-2 in the sabre, and 11-5 in the women’s foil. The men’s foil and epee contained some especially close fights, and the Australian captain, N. Whitmont, again impressed. An invitation will be sent to the Australian Fencing Association early next month to send a team to tour New Zealand later in the season. At an after-match function last night for the Australian Universities’ side, Mr M. B. Gittos, a member of the New Zealand Association, said the invitation would probably be in Australia when the tourists returned. They leave here on May 6.
