Peter Thomson, of Melbourne, shot a second round 76 and slumped to a tie for seventeenth place today at the half-way stage of the 40,000-dol-lar tournament of champions. Thomson also had scored a 76 In the first round and his 36-hole total of 152 left him nine strokes behind the lead. Although bad weather had troubled the 23 contestants on the first day, Don January today played a course record of 65—seven under scratch for the Desert Inn Country Club course—to lead the field. January included eight birdies in his score, as he recovered brilliantly after his opening round 78. His 36-hole total was 143.
