Canterbury’s Good Lead In Easter Tournament

"The Press" Special Service

DUNEDIN, April 21. At the end of the first day in the New Zealand Universities’ annual Easter tournament, at Dunedin yesterday, the Canterbury University College team was leading in points for the Tournament Shield. Of the three sports completed, Canterbury won the boxing and the shooting, and Otago the rowing. The standard of shooting was high. The best individual aggregate was that of I. Newton (Victoria). R. W. Kingsley (Canterbury) was second, and other Canterbury men highly placed were A. M. Todd (third equal) and R. Beamish (sixth). The boxing finals provided very even fights in all weights. The outstanding boxer-fighter of the tournament was again I. A. McDougall (Canterbury), wjio showed great skill in knocking out his very strong and determined opponent in the fourth round of the middle-weight final. In the heavy-weight class, W. Whineray scored a knockout win in very short time, to regain the title which he won in Auckland two years ago. Another Canterbury fighter, C. Wilson, won his final by default. Of the other Canterbury entrants, C. Mitcalfe was unlucky not to be judged the winner of his weight. The Canterbury rowing crews were below their standard of 1956. when they were successful in all events. In the double sculls, the only event won by Canterbury yesterday, a protest was lodged against the first two crews to finish, Otago and Victoria, on the grounds that their coxswains were under the prescribed weight. Athletes’ Success In the athletic section Canterbury gained victories. In the discus, R. G. Ball broke the previous record by nearly five feet, but the throw was not allowed as a record, as the throwing circle was found to be five-eighths of an inch too wide. Excellent baton-changing was a feature of the Canterbury team’s win in the sprint relay. In the heats of the 440 yards. B. H. Kerr and T. I. Crossen were content to qualify easily, and the final of this race should be a feature. D. Beauchamp and J. D. Macdonald were second and third in the mile, and D. Davison showed good form in a heat of the 220 yards to defeat the titleholder. P. Smith (Otago). Misses J. Nixon and A. Macdonald were outstanding in the women’s events. In winning the broad jump from Miss Macdonald, Miss Nixon showed good form in most adverse conditions. In the 100 yards the placings were reversed. As these two girls won their heats of the 220 yards, they are well on the way to winning the women’s section of the athletics by themselves. Record for Snoep

A very high standard was seen in the swimming events. In a heat of the men’s 100 yards freestyle, the national champion, O Snoep (Canterbury) broke the New Zealand universities record for the distance with a time of 55sec. I. H. McDonald won his heat of the 220 yards breaststroke, an event in which the standard is very high. The Canterbury water polo team is assured of winning the title in this section of the tournament. In the vital match, against Auckland, the team won by 12 goals to 8. The main scorer was A. R. Peters, and F. Sonntag and F. J. McKenzie were also outstanding. The Auckland team, led by K. Boswell, was expected to be the chief opponent for the title, but clever tactics by the Canterbury team, of which McKenzie was the captain, kept their forwards under control. Tennis has been the least successful sport as far as Canterbury is concerned. All entrants were eliminated in the first round of the singles titles, and only two doubles matches were won by the Canterbury players. The women’s basketball team was unfortunate to lose its match with Auckland by only one goal. Results:— ROWING Fours, with cox.—Otago No. 1,1; Victoria No. 1,2; Canterbury No. 1, 3. RAIN STOPS CRICKET Victoria 120 For Four

*The Press’ Special Service DUNEDIN, April 21. Canterbury College was on even terms with Victoria College at the end of the day’s play in the second round of games in the Easter tournament at Logan Park yesterday. Victoria batted first and scored 120 for four wickets before play was abandoned at 3.30 p.m. Steady drizzle blowing across the ground all day made conditions suitable for Rugby but not cricket. The soft pitch and wet ball favoured the batsmen, but the heavy outfield reduced the yield from their strokes. It was impossible for bright cricket to be played in the conditions, and the highlight of the day for most people was the arrival on the ground of the untuneful Otago University capping band, which provided a humorous sidelight. The mediumpace bowlers, W. Haskell and T. Young, received no assistance from the pitch, and the slow combination— G. Alabaster and J. B. Park—was quickly introduced. The former Otago Plunket Shield representative. Alabaster, bowled his leg-breaks accurately for most of the day, and deserved his three wickets for 55 runs from 30 overs. The offspinner, Park, was even more economical, but could not capture a wicket. The points for deciding the winner of the tournament will be difficult to determine if the present weather continues for, so far, in the scheduled three days, there has been only one full day of cricket, and in that time Canterbury s ored a first innings win over Otago. The selectors of the New Zealand Universities’ team, Mr L. D. Smith, and the chairman of the management committee of the Otago Cricket Association, Mr E. Hayes, are also perturbed by the conditions, which have given them little chance to select a team to play Otago. Scores VICTORIA First Innings M. Lance, b Alabaster .. .. 14 P. Coutts, c Park, b Alabaster .. 39 D. Ward, run out .. .. 27 H. Carver, not out .. .. 20 J. Thomson, c Hunter, b Alabaster .. .. .. 16 J. M. Pope, not out .. .. 2 Extras (1 bye, 1 leg bye) .. 2 Total for four wicket.. 120 Bowling.—W. Haskell, 4 overs, 0 maidens, 10 runs, 0 wickets; T. Young, 3,3, 0,0; A. Timpson, 7,2, 13, 0; G. Alabaster, 30, 12, 55, 3; R. West, 1,1, 0,0; J. B. Park, 27. 9, 32, 0. Otago, playing Auckland, had scored 152 for the loss of five wickets at the afternoon tea adjournment. The opening batsman, M. Aim (31), and D. Harding (54) batted attractively, but the pitch favoured them.
