TRACK WORK AT RICCARTON

Good Sprints By Two-Year-Olds

Sarcelle, Madame Christine, and Bow Tie. which will meet in the Canterbury Jockey Club's Champagne Stakes on Monday, sprinted well on a holding track at Riccarton on Thursday. The work was done on the trial grass. To avoid galloping at speed on the turns, many of the trialists were sprinted along the back straight, and were easing up by the time they got to the half-mile. Bow Tie (G. W. Mein) led Rosalie (B. Dodds) by a length after sprinting half a mile along the back in Bow Tie is not usually a good track galloper, but he appeared to act well in the going. He has been running his races out strongly, and should master six furlongs without trouble in the Champagne Stakes. Madame Christine (W. Beck) and Sarcelle (W. Hanlin) also recorded 51 4-ssec for their half-mile along the back. Madame Christine led by half a length at the end, but Sarcelle had the outside running. Stablemates in Sprint The stablemates. Desperado (T. Wilson) and Asunder (N. C. Bonney) sprinted from the half-mile in 55sec. The Great Easter Handicap candidates, Copenhagen (A. J. Stokes) and Motueka (R. W. Gould) sprinted five furlongs along the back in Imin 5 4-ssec, finishing a good trial on terms. Angelsey (B. Parsons) recorded 55 l-ssec for his half-mile along the back straight, and the stablemates. Calcutta Sweep (W. Beck) and Dhofar (W. Hanlin) followed in 52 1- a good gallop under the conditions. Core (R. Hanlin) started at the half-mile, and finished in 53 4-ssec, a smart run for one of his class. Wee Durham (T. Wilson) and Assembly (N. C. Bonney) were three lengths clear of Fulgent (A. J. Stokes) after sprinting five furlongs down the back in Imin 6 4-ssec. Honours of the trial were with Assembly, which gave Wee Durham a start. Wee Durham, a consistent North Island sprinter, and a Great Easter Handicap candidate, appears to have stood up to her racing well. Haughty Chief (N. Hdy) and Tamarisk (R. W. Gould) sprinted from the mile to the half-mile in 54 4-ssec. Haughty Chief led by a length from the start. Tess (B. W. McDonald) was under a good hold half length in front of Demand (W. Hanlin) after running seven furlongs iu Imin 40 2- The pace slackailed in the straight; they recorded 42 3-ssec for the first three furlongs. Goldwyn (N. Hoy) and Iroquoi (A. J. Stokes) ran from the mile on terms in Imin 49 2-ssec. the first half strongly on better going in 52 l-ssec. Good Trial Iroquoi had more weight than her companion, and it was a useful trial for the Autumn Plate on Monday. Bagatelle (C. McDonald) ran seven furlongs in Imin 36 4-ssec, the first three keenly in 40 2-ssec. Ridden by her trainer, J. C. Bagby. Mindanao sprinted home from the three furlongs in 39 3-ssec. It was good sprinting under the conditions, and brought this Wanganui filly into further favour for the Champagne The stablemates. Sun House (B W. McDonald) and Smuggles (J. L. Coulter) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 21sec. Sun House went more keenly than her companion. Gav Romeo (D. J. Thistoll) and Cristatus (L. McGuire) sprinted home from the half-mile on terms in 55 4-ssec.

Melinda Jane (N. Hoy) sped over three furlongs in the back straight in 36 l-ssec. She appeared to handle the conditions, but had little weight up. Leprechaun (A. H. Eastwood) did well to run Imin 49sec for his mile, and to finish two lengths ahead of his stablemate. Duel (G. W. Mein), which joined in for the last seven furlongs. The last half-mile was run in 54 3-ssec. Necks separated Nehru (C. McDonald), King Lyn (D. J. Thistoll), and Shame (J. W. McDonald), in that order, at the end of six furlongs run in Imin 24 3-ssec. They worked up speed quickly and recorded 28 3-ssec for the first two furlongs. Belletavia (R. McDonald) and Fern (J. L. Coulter) sprinted five furlongs, the last four in 56 4-ssec. They finished on terms.

Keen Work King Robin (M. D. Alexander) worked over a mile in his semi-final trial for the Great Autumn Handicap, but his stablemate, Kiaree Beau (W. Gibbs), galloped without dash. They were joined for the last seven furlongs by Mimbar (C. T. Wilson), which stayed on terms with King Robin to the end. Kiaree Beau was several lengths behind. King Robin’s mile took Imin 50 1-5 sec, and the last half mile was run in 55 3-ssec. Although easing right up near the end, Rise and Shine (C. T. Wilson) recorded 55 l-ssec for half a mile along the back straight. She has seldom been better than at present. Curtain Raiser (M. D. Alexander) sprinted half a mile down the back in 55 2-ssec, running the first three furlongs strongly in 41 3-ssec, then slackening on the turn. Writer (C. McDonald) and Meteorologist (D. J. Thistoll) were well clear of their stable-mate. Brown Baron (J. W. McDonald), finishing six furlongs in Imin 22 4-ssec, the first four in 53 4-ssec. The stable-mates. Lucky Time (W Hanlin) and Neptune’s Pride (J. Cowan) ran half a mile along the back in 55 l-ssec.

Warstep Candidate Juventas (J. Bagby) sprinted from the half mile in 56 l-ssec, and appeared to do her work well. She may be one of the best of the three-year-old fillies in 1 the Warstep Stakes. Scuppered (B. W. McDonald) led Gay Tommy (C. T. Wilson) by half a length ending seven furlongs in Imin 36 4-ssec. the last four in 55 2-ssec. Scuppered has shaped well in her preparation for the Great Autumn Handicap. Bosky (R. E. Johnstone) and Tarbillon (W. Gibbs) were companions over a mile, run in Imin 57sec.

Royal Avon (C. T. Wilson) and Peraea (N. Hoy) were on terms a length ahead of Miss Fire (A. H. Eastwood) ending half a mile along the back in 52 3-ssec.

The Trentham-trained Imitation (A. J. Stokes) took the honours of hiff trial with Golden Ribbon (B. S. Finlayson). Imitation gave Golden Ribbon two lengths start, but was on terms after two furlongs in the back straight. They slackened speed inside the last furlong, but recorded 54sec for half a mile. Imitation is a fit colt for the Champagne Stakes. Merrimayes (A. J. Stokes), easing right up near the finish, recorded 56 l-ssec for half a mile along the back. Masai (C. T. Wilson) followed over the same ground in 56sec, and also slackened speed near the end. Steadfast in Form Steadfast (R. Hanlin) recorded 1 min 11 2-ssec for five furlongs, going strongly over the first two in 27 2-ssec and the first three in 41 3-ssec. He is well forward for the Opawa Handicap on Monday. Solstice (G. W. Mein) and Dart Away (R. J. Biair) sprinted six furlongs on terms in Imin 21 3-ssec. Dart Away, a winner at Amberley at his last start, will probably have conditions to suit him in the Autumn Plate on Monday. He will be ridden by W. D. Skelton. Jolly Miller (G. W. Mein) led Escalado (R. J. Blair) by half a length after a run over four hurdles. The stable-mates jumped well. Trustworthy (N. C. Bonney) started behind them, and after hitting the second flight; drew up to be on terms at the third. He dropped back again towards the finish. Hunt the Slipper (J. R. Currie) jumped cleanly in his round of four hurdles.
