N.Z. ISLANDS IN PACIFIC

Safety Measures Assured (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 19. No official comment was forthcoming yesterday on the statement of Dr. F. Farley that the British hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific would endanger the Cook Islands. However, the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) has made several statements about the safety of inhabited islands in the region of the tests which will take place at Christmas Island. On March 5, he said, the British Government had given assurances that the tests would not take place under any conditions in which inhabited islands might be affected by radioactive material. “The assurances concerning safety measures are adequate,” said the Prime Minister, “but the Government will take any local measures which may seem desirable to ensure the safety of Pacific islands for which we have a responsibility.”
