“Danger To N.Z. Territory”

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, April 19. New Zealand territory is endangered by the British hydro-

gen bomb test, due shortly at Christmas Island, said Dr. F. Farley, senior lecturer in physics, last night at a meeting called by three student groups of the Auckland University College.

Parts of the Cook Islands lie within 600 miles of the test area. Dr. Farley warned that this was too close: if such a distance was safe, why were the tests not being held in the Atlantic Ocean? The effect of the test, the scientist claimed, could not be calculated. If it could, there was no

need for testing. Destructive force of the British bomb could be five thousand times greater than the Nagasaki explosion. The meeting attracted 150 students and senior members of the faculty. In a motion the meeting passed, the Government was called on to withdraw New Zealand assistance in the experiment, and to initiate action to halt further tests.
