TUNNEL UNDER CHANNEL
Request For Survey
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 18
The British Government has been asked to sanction a £270,000 survey for a Channel tunnel —a project mooted since 1802.
Reporting this yesterday, the “News Chronicle” said that an American-French group, co-oper-ating with British engineers, wanted to carry out a year’s study of the geological problems and the commercial possibilities.
American bankers have offered to 'put up at least one-third of the £100,000,000 cost if the survey were favourable, the “News Chronicle” said.
The tunnel came another step nearer last night with the revival in the House of Commons of the Channel Tunnel Committee, which was told that the survey would probably be made with a new type of echo-sounder. Parliamentary pressure will begin soon on both the British and French Governments.
Some 300 members of Parliament of all parties like the idea, and many French deputies are also interested, according to the “News Chronicle.”
