MR J. S. ANCHOR (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, April 19.
The death has occurred in Tauranga of Mr J. S. Anchor at the age of 78. One of the pioneers of radio in the Waikato, Mr Anchor built a radio station in Hamilton named IZH, and with his sort ran it in conjunction with his radio business for many years before the State took over all private broadcasting units and closed the Hamilton station. Mr Anchor came to Hamilton in 1920 and set up his radio business and later his radio station. With his wife and four children he remained in Hamilton for 30 years. He retired to live at Tauranga seven years ago.
He was a member of the vestry of St. George’s Church, Frankton, for many years,- and was also president of the Frankton Ratepayers’ Association for several terms.
Mr Anchor was known throughout the Dominion as a bowler of outstanding ability. In 1937. with J. Robinson, also of the Frankton Club, he was unbeaten in 21 games to win the New Zealand pairs championship.
