HIGHWAY TO AIRPORT
Council Adopts New Name The Waimairi County Council last evening decided that Memorial avenue will be the name of the highway under construction from the city to Harewood airport, which has so far been known as Burnside Memorial avenue. The council received Mr W. W. Laing and Mr F. W. Freeman as a deputation from the committee which has been promoting the memorial avenue. Asking the council to reconsider the naming of the proposed avenue. Mr Laing said that the name Burnside had nothing to do with the avenue. The names, William Boag and Burnside, were not now associated with the avenue, although they had referred to the owner and name of the farm which had now been subdivided. There was no other Memorial avenue in New Zealand, said Mr Laing. Mr Freeman said that the committee thought that the name should be brought down, to two words.
Cr. E. R. Stead suggested that it was not clear as to what the avenue was a memorial. Mr Laing said that it was proposed to place a plaque at each end of the avenue indicating that it was a memorial to members of all the armed services who fell in World War 11. Cr. C. L. Austin said that the name might mean nothing in 30 or 40 years. Approving the new name, the council decided that the name Burnside should be used as the name for that district.
