MAROONED IN MID-RIVER
Rakaia Farmer’s Plight Mr Thomas Pearse, a Rakaia farmer, who set out to ford the Rakaia river near Rakaia Island in a jeep late yesterday afternoon, was forced to abandon the vehicle when it stuck in a channel of the river and seek safety on a high shingle bank. With the.river rising in fresh, Mr Pearse was forced to spend last night on the shingle bank. His predicament was noticed and reported to the local police, but nothing could be done to rescue Mr Pearse before darkness fell. The river is not rising rapidly enough for Mr Pearse to be in danger, but after his night in the open he may well be pleased to note the arrival of a party of policemen this morning, who will attempt to rescue him. The police may enlist the aid of a helicopter.
