Sea Transport
Sir, —A showdown has to come, will come soon, and, I hope, will be the dominant issue at November’s elections, concerning the hagridden, piggy-backed primary producers and industrialists of New Zealand. Mr Holland may say (Bay of Plenty) what very fine fellows watersiders are, and Mr Shand say that shipowners are the cause of imbecile time-lags on the waterfront: but perhaps both statements are tainted with electioneering. Probably, I have had more practical experience than most men in New Zealand concerning land management and farm economics, and I unhesitatingly affirm that as far as greedy, vicious, senseless, taxation goes, there is absolutely no difference between Holland and Nash! Both are out to get the last sixpence they can. Is it any wonder that ability, work, thrift, honesty, everywhere are saying, “What’s the use?”—Yours, etc., DOMINANT ISSUE. April 12, 1957.
