U.K. Attitude To Makarios
LONDON, April 11.
The British Government said tonight that it was not prepared to accept Archbishop Makarios as the sole representative of Cypriot opinion in any constitutional talks. The Lord Chancellor (Lord Kilmuir) said: “The Government has recognised that when the time comes for talks with the representatives of all the Cyprus proposals, Archbishop Makarios would certainly be one of the GreekCypriot representatives. But it is not prepared to accept Archbishop Makarios as the sole representative of Cypriot opinion.”
He said that in the present circumstances, the Government saw no purpose in receiving the archbishop. The delicacy of the whole problem was the balance between Turkish and Greek interests.
‘‘lf we appeared to be taking the archbishop as the representative of the whole range of the island, we would, I think, do immense harm,” Lord Kilmuir said.
