POULTRY SHOW

Woolston Club Has Record Entries

More than 500 entries—a record for the club—were exhibited in the Selwyn Street Hall when the twelfth annual show of the Woolston Poultry Club started yesterday. Judging took several hours to complete. Last year there were 400 entries.

The birds on show ranged in size from strutting Rhode Island Reds, to twittering finches, and many of them did not let the show obstruct the important business of laying eggs. These were destroyed by stewards because of a fear of unauthorised breeding of pedigree stock.

The award for the best bird of the show went to S. Pentecost with his entry, a black-red Old English game bird. Mr N. W. Hawkins, the judge in this section said: “Three birds were selected by the judges. The game bird was the best, although a White Leghorn was a very close runner-up. The game bird was the best I have seen at this show for a very long time.” Judges said that the condition and showing of most entries were good for this time of the year. In . some cases birds were not showing good feather but this had to be expected. Conditions generally was satisfactory. Placed birds and australorps were good but the remainder of this class fell away badly, commented the judge of the heavy breed poultry section (Mr S. H. Nicoll, of Ashburton). “Some were young and not finished. The males lacked type but were mainly in good colour. Females were a fair class.” Results were as follows: Poultry Standard classes (Judge, Mr A. R. Rowe). —S. Pentecost, 4 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third; C. C. Minty, 3 firsts, 2 seconds, 1 third; K.
