DRIVERS' UNION CLAIMS

No Agreement In Conciliation

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 11.

A dispute between the New Zealand Drivers’. Federation and employers’ representatives broke down in Conciliation Councfl in Wellington yesterday. No agreement was reached over claims and counter-claims for a new award. The hearing was adjourned until May 23 and 24 to allow the federation advocate and assessors to report back to the 10,000 drivers concerned.

The federation sought a flat increase of £2 weekly for all drivers and for an alteration in the hours of work of country drivers, from nine hours worked from any hour of the day to a maximum of eight hours without overtime worked between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Employers’ counter-claims included removal of the picnic day from the award and the inclusion of a general shift work clause. Shift work is at present worked only by a small section of the drivers under the award.

An offer of 10s weekly made by the employers to earthmoving equipment operators was conditional on. the discussion of the general shift work clause. This was opposed by the drivers and the two-day hearing broke up yesterday afternoon with no agreement on major issues.
