Mathematics Club For School Pupils

The Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Mathematical Association, started by Mr W. W. Sawyer, formerly lecturer in mathematics at Canterbury University College, has begun another season with more than 100 members.

The new president js Mr Allan Ramsay, formerly head of the mathematics department of Marlborough College, England, and now of Christ’s College. The secretary is Mr F. E Morris, also of Christ’s College. Committee members are:— Messrs G. S. Troup, Eric Lenz, G. S. Smith, T. Penney, and A. J. Gainsford. The opening meeting at the Christchurch Girls’ High School was addressed by Mr Lenz on errors in algebra and on the slide rule. Pupil members brought their solutions of a problem paper to the second meeting at the Avonside Girls’ High School and there was animated discussion. The president summed up the solutions. The next two talks in the association’s programme will both be given by Mr Ramsay, the first on the development of numbers and its sequel on elementary operations with complex numbers.
