ARMED FORCES’ MOBILITY
Admiral’s Claim Disputed
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 10. the New Zealand Navy is the most mobile arm of the three services,” said the chairman of the military sub-committee of the Air League of New Zealand (Mr W. Scollay). He was commenting on a statement in Auckland by the Chief of the Naval Staff (RearAdmiral J. E. Mcßeath).
Mr Scollay said it was an accepted fact that the mobile arm of the modern-day defence system was the Air Force. To compare the times needed to dispatch and get into action a force from New Zealand to a trouble spot such as Malaya bore this out. “Modern medium-range bombers —which we are led to believe the Government may purchase for the R.N.Z.A.F.—could be in action in the theatre within 12 hours. It would ;take the most modern naval ship at least 12 days to reach there.” he said.
Mr Scollay described ReairAdmiral Mcßeath’s statement as “damaging to the New Zealand public’s understanding of the complex defence problem which faces the country today.”
