NAME FOR FIRST VISCOUNT
Change Considered Unlikely
The National Airways Corporation is unlikely to accede to requests to have its first turboprop Viscount, City of Wellington, renamed for either Auckland or Christchurch, which will be its trunk terminals. The general manager of the corporation (Mr J. J. Busch) said this in Christchurch yesterday. The Christchurch City Council this week decided to protest to the corporation at the name City of Wellington, which it considered unsuitable on the ground that the plane would operate exclusively between Auckland and Christchurch. The council also decided to seek renaming after Christchurch, and Cr. A. R. Guthrey, during a discussion, said that “if Auckland objects we can get Wellington to referee,” because he did not think the people of Wellington would “give two hoots.”
Mr Busch said that the name City of Wellington had been chosen by the corporation’s board. The reason for the choice was that the first plane would be the flagship of the Viscount fleet and the board had considered it appropriate that the plane should be named for New Zealand’s capital city. “I hardly think the name will be changed,” he said.
