N.Z. COASTAL SHIPPING
Country “Held To Ransom”
(New Zealand Press Association, DUNEDIN, April 9.
New Zealand coastal shipping had reached the stage where it was about the most inefficient in the world, said the PostmasterGeneral and Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. P. Shand) at a public meeting in Dunedin tonight. The industry was holding the country to ransom, just as the mining industry did some years ago, and he would absolve neither employers nor employees from the blame, the Minister said. Mr Shand said he had learnt only a few days ago that commercial salt produced in Marlborough would cost more to ship to Bluff or Auckland than salt sent from any port in England. “Coastal shipping has reached the stage where it is driving itself out of business and where air transport is taking over its functions,” he said. “It is about the most inefficient in the world.” Mr Shand added that the Union Steam Ship Company was not prepared to renew its ferry across Cook Strait by itself, as it claimed it could not make it pay.
